Whenever I write pieces, I draw inspiration from either my llife or that of someone close to me. In the case of “Juliet to Romeo,” it was my own. Now I know what y’all are thinking: “Who is this about?” Well, gossip ain’t really one of my strong points so I couldn’t tell you.
What I can tell you is that the piece comes from an age old tale of boy meets girl meets day-time drama, soap opera situation. I’m talking about the unthinkable. Because let’s face it, reality makes fiction. And there’s probably been more than a million Romeo and Juliets since our species became dumb enough to fall in love… I kid.
Poets, writers, and artists alike will always find a way to allude back to Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” myself included. Besides the fact that Shakespeare is hollywood gold (Dicaprio & Danes, West Side Story), it’s a tale that a person could easily relate to. The loss of a friend, lover, family member. Or even the battle that comes with winning them back. It’s all there.
My piece (taken from Juliet’s perspective) is about sacrifice. How wanting somethng so simple could easily be turned into a federal court case. And not just in the literal “ride-or-die” chick sense. Although that could be an option.
It’s about remembering not to take our loved ones for granted, knowing that life, and its crazy circumstances, could instantly take them away.
